Company History
On April 11, 1934, a remarkable man, named Aurel I. Davidyan, was born in the beautiful city of Bucovina Cernautsi, Romania. By the time Aurel was at the young age of six, his father (a master craftsman and builder of log homes) could tell that Aurel was going to be a very creative and innovative person. Years later, Aurel developed his own style of flip-flops using cowhide nailed by tacks to wooden soles, and sold this footwear to enable him to support his family through two years of famine and five years of war (1940-1945). The war brought great poverty and suffering, but it also helped supply rubber from the tubes and tires of destroyed German military vehicles. Taking advantage of this windfall of material, Aurel developed a hand stitched, lace-to-toe boot with a leather upper, a rubber sole and a mat of grass/hay for the cushioning.
Realizing his son's remarkable talent, in 1950 Aurel's father arranged an apprenticeship for him with a business owner in Cernautsi, Romania, named Mr. Bujeak. In exchange for teaching his skills in footwear, tailoring, and auto upholstery, Mr. Bujeak wanted Aurel's father to build him a log house. Both men kept their agreement and five years later young Aurel was among the best in the business. He later took over Mr. Bujeak's business, overseeing a staff of 3 shoemakers, 3 tailors, and 1 upholsterer.
Aurel got married in February of 1964, and went on to have 15 children, one of whom loved his father's work very much. His son, Vasiliy A. Davidyan, was born in 1973 and already by age 5 was by his father's side in the family's factory. Vasiliy loved to learn from his father’s work and at age 6, he enjoyed stitching a couple of hats a day after school. Taking after his father, Vasiliy eventually mastered being a Tailor, Pattern Engineer, Shoemaker, and Auto Upholsterer. He went on to take over his family's factory at the age of 16. Vasiliy ran the family business on the same principles of excellence and customer service, that his father had started with, endeavoring to make every customer leave happy.
In 1996, at age 26, Vasiliy got married and then moved to the United States in 1998. He saw America as a place where hard-working, ambitious, and intelligent people could see their dreams become a reality. Those dreams have become a reality for him, and are continuing to blossom with the next generation of Davidyans helping in the family business.
